Previous C-section
Where another C-Section is planned based on your choice or a medical indication.
Breech or transverse presentation
Where the baby's head is not located closest to the cervix.
Placenta previa
Where the placenta partially or completely blocks the cervix.
Previous uterine surgery
For example, fibroid removal also known as myomectomy.
Blockage of the cervix
For example, a fibroid (non-cancerous growth of the uterus).
Multiple babies
For example, twins or triplets.
Maternal choice
Where the person requests a C-section as their mode of delivery.
Certain medical conditions
Where your doctor advises that you are not a candidate for a vaginal delivery.
C-sections in labour
The baby cannot tolerate labour
Which we can see by changes in the baby’s heart rate.
Labour stops progressing
Either the cervix does not fully open despite contractions, or the baby stops moving down in the pelvis.
Cord prolapse
Where a portion of the umbilical cord slips through the cervix and is in front of the baby’s head, which can limit the blood supply to the baby.
Other conditions
Conditions that develop during the labour process that make either the birthing individual or the baby unwell (e.g. a severe infection of the uterus).
