After your surgery, you will be transferred to the recovery room and monitored closely as your medications wear off. After this, you will be transferred to a postoperative unit.
You will be encouraged to drink fluids and walk as soon as you feel ready.
If your Foley catheter was removed after surgery, you may be asked to empty your bladder within a few hours of surgery. If you still have the Foley catheter in, it is usually removed within 24 hours.
Non prescription pain medication like acetaminophen (Tylenol), and anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) are first line for pain control. You will be given a prescription for stronger pain medication.
While you are in hospital, you may be given an injectable blood thinner to avoid blood clots forming in the legs or lungs.
You will be assessed by the surgical team to determine when it is safe to be discharged home.
