An overview of the equipment and instruments used in hysteroscopy.
Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to see the inside of your uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin camera which is inserted into the uterus after passing through the vagina and cervix.
Fluid medium
During hysteroscopy, fluid is used to gently expand the uterine cavity to allow doctors to see the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium).
Tubal ostia
The fallopian tubes open into the uterus (tubal ostia) and these can be seen as two small holes on the top left and right of the uterus. Seeing the tubal ostia confirms that the hysteroscope is in the correct location, inside the uterus.
Hysteroscope
A hysteroscope has 5 parts:
1. The endoscope which has a small tunnel to allow passage of small instruments to remove tissue from inside the uterus.
2. Fluid inflow channel (a) to gently expand the uterus.
