Your care provider may recommend an induction of labour for reasons associated with your (parental) wellbeing or your baby’s (fetal) wellbeing. Your care provider may suggest an induction for other reasons that are not on this list.
Parental reasons
Post-dates pregnancy
You are past the estimated due date of the pregnancy.
Rupture of membranes
Your water has broken without labour starting.
Advanced age (over 40 years)
You are 40 years of age or older at the time of delivery.
Diabetes
You are being monitored or treated for diabetes.
High blood pressure/Preeclampsia
Your blood pressure is elevated or you develop related complications.
Medical conditions
You have a medical condition that is posing a risk to you and/or the pregnancy.
Fetal reasons
Concerns with fetal well being
For example, low amniotic fluid around the baby on ultrasound.
Concerns with estimated fetal growth
The baby is smaller or larger than expected on imaging.
