The introduction of high fidelity portable and hand held ultrasound systems has allowed physicians to use ultrasound at the point of care for rapid assessment of the patient's condition and determine appropriate therapy. The modules in this website assist with teaching and learning Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FOCUS) and lung ultrasound, helping the user to relate ultrasound images to the three-dimensional anatomy of the structures they are viewing.

Point of care ultrasound for assessing the heart using a protocol called Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FOCUS) has provided clinically important information within minutes to guide decision-making in critically ill patients. We have created this online interactive module to assist with teaching and learning the assessment of cardiac function with FOCUS. Users can view the TTE recordings for each of the 5 FOCUS views and see a corresponding 3D model of the probe, ultrasound plane, heart and rib cage for each view.

Lung ultrasound has been successfully used in diagnosing the cause of respiratory failure in the Emergency Department and has been shown to have higher sensitivity and specificity than chest X ray and physical examination in detecting pleural effusions and pneumothorax. We have created this online interactive module to assist with teaching and learning the use of ultrasound in the assessment of the lung. Users can view the ultrasound recordings for each of 6 probe positions and see a corresponding 3D model of the probe, ultrasound plane, and torso for each view.
