Wedge technique overview
- For tumours close to the liver surface, wedge resection is a good parenchymal-sparing resection option.
- As with any procedure involving the division of liver parenchyma, significant blood loss is a concern and should be reduced as much as possible with such measures as waterjet dissection and effective use of electrocautery.
- In cases of cirrhosis or fatty liver, and/or a patient who has been subject to a large amount of chemotherapy, wedge resections may be considered the best option.
- Lesions smaller than 3cm may not be visible on preoperative scans, but instead may be palpated on the liver during surgery.
