Abdominalperineal Resection
Surgical management for low rectal cancer
Abdominoperineal Resection (APR) is a surgical operation performed to treat cancer in the low rectum or it involves the sphincter muscles. In this procedure, the rectum and anus are removed. You will require a permanent stoma as there is no longer the ability to connect the intestine back together. You will receive stoma care with the nurse specialized in wound, ostomy, and continence (NSWOC). This video provides a helpful guide to patients and caregivers about rectal cancer, the procedure of abdominoperineal resection, expectations before and after the operation, as well as strategies to improve recovery.
