Last month was the first in-person conference of the Association of Medical Illustrators since the covid-19 pandemic. TVASurg production team member Paul Kelly attended the conference and even made a podcast episode on it! The structure of AMI conferences is influenced by the continuing education credits (CEUs) that Certified Medical Illustrators (CMIs) must accrue over a 5-year time period in order to maintain their certification. These credits are arranged in three categories: BioMed, Art, and Business. The talks at the AMI annual conference are scheduled so that attendees can cover all the credits they'll need by attending the meetings.
Every year the meeting includes a concurrently run "tech showcase" where presenters give a short looping presentation on a specific software tool or production technique. Shown here is Andrew Swift from iso-form, showing some of his workflows in Pixologic ZBrush.
One of the most exciting parts of every meeting is the physcial "Salon" gallery space, where printed illustrations are hung up on display for attendees to see in person. There are also multiple monitor screens set up to view the animation and interactive submissions. This year TVASurg submitted 4 videos! You can check out each one by clicking the image links above.
A great benefit to the in-person meeting format is the Vesalius Trust auction. Here you can bid on any number of memorabilia items donated by members, including rare anatomy and surgical textbooks, magazines, physical teaching models, and even antique art supplies. The Vesalius Trust is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation set up by the AMI to fund student projects and other educational initiatives in the field.
