Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) include hormonal and non-hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) and hormonal subdermal implants. The most commonly used and available IUD is a small T-shaped device inserted into the uterine cavity. There are two main types of IUDs: non-hormonal (copper) and hormonal. IUD insertion can be painful, especially in nulliparous patients. Pre-treatment with analgesics, and/or a paracervical block, may be offered.
